Each one of us learned a little something about marketing in our first jobs. Whether we were dealing with baseballs, ice cream, or burgers…we all started moving in the right direction at a young age.



My first job during my college summers was to dress up as an oversized strawberry and roam the boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland. I was creating my own little “mini-event” to promote the fruit stand where I worked. Fruit shake sales went off the charts, as I engaged people with laughter and fun. This taught me that marketing in a live setting is very effective!



I was an umpire at age 12, and had to learn the entire Major League Baseball Rulebook. Think about the pressure on a 12-year-old to never make a wrong call! As a digital strategist today, I stay on top of ever-evolving rules in the digital world. I always try to make the ‘right call’ on which digital platforms will move my clients forward. Umpires have to get it right every time, and so do digital strategists.



My first job was in a shopping mall at Baskin Robbins scooping ice cream. This is where I started my marketing career with suggestive selling techniques. Would you like sprinkles on your ice cream? Always trying to please the customer.



My first job was at Burger King in high school. Within a month of working there, I was promoted to Production Leader because I was super fast at taking orders and very accurate in counting change. I still like working with numbers and in fast-paced environments where I can juggle a lot of orders at once.



My first foray into marketing was selling Christmas greenery decorations for my 6th-grade choral program. I busted my hump every day going door to door for weeks in order to win the top prize, a big gift certificate to the mall. In the end, I earned 2nd place to the top prize getter who pitched sales at his dad’s office. I learned that sometimes it’s better to work smarter, not harder.



In my first job delivering newspapers, I re-invested my earnings to buy a bigger bicycle and basket, so I could grow my little business from 20 to 100 houses. Each Wednesday was insert day. I soon realized that if I didn’t invest the time to insert those coupons and flyers that people expected, they didn’t tip me. This paper route gave me the first taste of running my own business and learning that investing in yourself and “going the extra mile” leads to bigger and better things.



Taking photos was my thing in High School. Photography classes led to the yearbook committee. Those early years got me hooked! As an adult, I loved capturing moments so much that I started my own business. Meeting people and creating moments they’ll cherish for years to come has given me great joy. I have loved my journey so far and will forever remain a student of photography!



My first job was at Panera Bread. Because of my amazing coworkers and bosses, I had a blast every shift. This job made me realize that I wanted work to not feel like work for the rest of my life. That’s what Marketing and Music is to me.

Today’s digital marketing tools are developing at a lightening pace. You need speed to compete but you’ll go nowhere without direction. Velocity Effect = speed + direction in marketing.
